I recently attended an MCA event – ‘New Ways of Working in Consulting’ – which focused on the needs and wants of ‘Gen Y’ (comprising of those born between the1980’s and early 1990’s) consultants. This discussion prompted me to consider how we at PPL can continue to develop so as to be at the forefront when it comes to offering an attractive environment for this new generation of consultants.
At a high-level, it emerged from the discussions that members of ‘Gen Y’ (a generation of which I am part) have higher expectations, are more independent, and are more likely to be disappointed by what organisations have to offer. Furthermore, the market of career choices has increased so broadly that ‘Gen Y’ can have difficulty narrowing down their options, and are more prone to boredom, with a desire for:
- Individual purpose
- Seeing whole projects brought to completion
- Organisational purpose
So what can we do to make sure that the working reality matches or exceeds the expectations of ‘Gen Y’?
From personal experience, I believe PPL offers ways of working and thinking that satisfy all of the above, with my work life very much involving individual purpose, organisational purpose, meaning, and choice, along with the other points mentioned! However, I do think it is important for us, and every other organisation, to reflect on these points as we grow – especially in relation to continuing to attract new talent in the future.
I read a blog recently that said that happiness is the result of the reality of your life matching or exceeding your expectations, and considering this in relation to an old but familiar saying – “a happy workforce is a productive workforce” – it follows that what all organisations should strive for is a happy workforce.
Therefore the question we are all trying to answer is:
Q: How do we attract new young talent and sustain happy employees?
And the answer is:
A: By continuously putting effort into developing a working environment that fulfils and exceeds expectations, with a focus on the seven points outlined above.
