In the third episode of our ‘Do What You Can’ Insight Series, Claire Kennedy is joined by Edel Harris OBE – former CEO of Mencap and recognised expert in the public and voluntary & community sector.

Claire and Edel discuss the challenges of making positive change, particularly for the charity sector, and the importance of taking risks in order to do something transformational. They talk about Edel’s aspirations for the new Government as well as the need to reform the health and social care sector.

Edel spent over 15 years operating at CEO level and is also a highly experienced Non-Executive Director and Chair, including for the Life Changes Trust, Scottish government’s Social Investment Fund and Scottish Council for Development & Industry. She brings extensive expertise in charity governance, regulation and risk management.

Edel is passionate about ensuring that all people, whatever their background or ability, are included, listened to and valued. She received her OBE in 2021 for her work to improve the lives of people with a disability.

At PPL, our experience across local government, the NHS, and the voluntary sector has shown us how political choices impact communities deeply. As we enter a new era of British politics, we recognise the importance, above all, of engaging with this change.

In our ‘Do What You Can’ Insight Series, we share our Senior Advisors’ perspective on what’s needed for positive change in this new era of British politics. We’ll discuss their learnings, sources of hope and personal actions for improvement.
